This compilation is a Maniacs' fan's dream! Reissuing their previously out-of-print first two recordings, Human Conflict No. 5 (1982) and Secrets of the I Ching (1983) is the kind of treatment one usually wishes for, but rarely gets realized! The liner notes give extensive information on the band's early days, as they scraped out a living raking leaves and writing songs -- including My Mother the War, Natalie's song which propelled the band to fame first in England, then in the US. 14 songs in all, a little rougher and jangly (and perhaps more adventurous) than their now characteristic seamless pop, but gems nonetheless!
