Notes / Reviews
This 1998 release presents chants and polyphony of votive masses in Mary's honor, celebrated weekly or even daily in medieval England. Mary was often worshipped more fervently than Jesus; as one member of the ensemble points out, 'She got the best music, the best poetry.' Medieval England celebrated both the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and her Coronation during Lammas, the Celtic festival of harvest, marking the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. 'We have drawn on 13th and 14th century repertoire to create a Ladymass for the summer portion of the church year, as it might have been sung around the feast of Mary's Assumption in August. To the settings of the liturgical texts of the Ladymass, we have added several devotional works in praise of Mary.'
