Based on a true story told in a book by the same name, this one of the most gripping, beautiful and mature productions of lesbian film to date. Set in WWII Berlin, the main characters play out a love affair intensified by not only the bombs falling all around them, but by the fact of one being married to a Nazi officer and the other being a Jewish journalist. The viewer may be surprised by the depiction of lesbian community and culture of the time, but not by the heart-wrenching ending of this story.
