Bernice Johnson Reagon, founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock, compiled and annotated the valuable Wade in the Water series; this is its first volume, subtitled The Concert Tradition. The African American concert spiritual tradition, which combines African and formal European classical performance styles, began with a tour by Fisk College students in 1871 and continues today on college and university campuses throughout the US. This 1994 release contains 19 tracks by a variety of choirs, including The Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Howard University Chamber Choir.
