This singer-songwriter is often compared to authors like Flannery O'Connor and Eudora Welty as well as musicians like Lucinda Williams, and her 1999 album (her 4th) presents another broad vision of pan-American culture. In My Mother's House deals with the struggles and changing relationships between mothers and daughters; Rosa's Coronas describes the dedication and pride a Cuban woman feels in her art of making cigars; and title track contemplates the pursuit of art and marching to the beat of a different drummer. Like so many Southerners, Kate knows a good story when she hears it, and in the retelling, opens the doors to one more corner of the universe and invites the rest of us to come along for the ride.
