Reception
CMJ New Music Monthly said that "much of the album tends to give off a background ambience" and that "Shivaree's nouveaux lounge, old-timey cabaret flare trickles with an underlying bizareness that smacks of one of those hypnotic late-night excursions so common in David Lynch films."
Billboard Magazine said that "while the musicianship of the group is indisputable, Parsley's unusual childish voice is stunted by pedestrian songwriting."
The Torontoist called the album "fascinating and almost unsettling in its uniqueness."
Stylus Magazine argued that although "they may have shrunk their range and scope slightly, the songwriting and execution is as strong as ever."
Phoenix New Times believed that "despite the low volume, this album delivers an emotional knockout punch."

Shivaree is an American alternative pop/rock band formed in 1999 consisting of Ambrosia Parsley (vocals), Danny McGough (keyboard), and Duke McVinnie (guitar). They have produced four albums, with approximately 500,000 combined sales. Shivaree is best known for the song "Goodnight Moon", released in 1999 and appearing in Dawson's Creek and Kill Bill: Volume 2.
History
The band takes its name from the French term, "shivaree", which means, roughly, a noisy mock serenade for newlyweds. It is most commonly used along the Mississippi River, and to the west of it.
They have produced four full-length albums (with one not receiving a North American release due to contract disagreements) and have approximately 500,000 combined sales to their name. They credit numerous other musicians in their work and are usually joined by two or three other collaborators when performing live. The band have mentioned their use of primarily Southern ideas and memes, and cite William Faulkner as an influence. After contract disagreements with their previous label, it appeared that the group would split up after their second album. However, an EP and another two albums later followed.
Their most well known song, "Goodnight Moon", was featured in Seasons 3 and 6 of the television series Dawson's Creek and played over the closing credits of the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill: Volume 2. It also plays through the closing scenes and the end credits of the film, Ni reprise ni échangée, the French comedy-drama with the English title, Monique, and was used in a commercial for the Norwegian clothing shop Cubus.
Band members
Shivaree's band members are vocalist Ambrosia Parsley, keyboardist Danny McGough, and guitarist Duke McVinnie.
Ambrosia Sings The News
In April 2004, Ambrosia Parsley embarked on a project for the liberal radio station Air America called Ambrosia Sings the News — a short song (always the same melody), usually under a minute or so long that attempted to encapsulate the contents of the previous week's headlines. Approximately 47-50 installments of "Ambrosia Sings the News" were aired with some being live performances. The show was successful enough that a single titled "2004 (The Year In Review...For Anyone Who Can Bear the Mere Thought)" that summarized exactly what the title suggests was sold exclusively via iTunes. In addition to her work with Shivaree, Parsley has appeared on Mocean Worker's album Enter the Mowo, and Verbena's La Musica Negra.

Ambrosia Parsley solo debut album
According to a Rounder Records publicist, Ambrosia was to release her debut solo album in the spring of 2008 but the album was never released. The reasons as to why her solo album was not released in 2008 is unknown but as of October 2009 through non-official sources it was confirmed that Parsley continues to work on her solo album and will eventually see its release.
On April 2010 the song "Rubble" was presented on www.ambrosiaparsley.net as the first single from her upcoming solo debut album (still untitled). The single became available for listening as streaming audio and a free download was offered on Parsley's official website but still no sign of an album release date.
On October 7, 2010 a message was posted on Parsley's official Facebook account that stated "Ambrosia has been hard at work on a solo project with the esteemed Elegant Too duo of Chris Maxwell and Phil Hernandez (Ray Davies, Yoko Ono, Fred Schneider, Jon Spencer, some others) and they’re threatening to debut a collection of heretofore unheard/unholy goods." On October 10, 2010 she debuted 3 new songs, "My Knees", "The Waltz" and an untitled song in a small live performance in Phoenicia, New York giving hope that an album will, in fact, be released.
On December 6, 2010 Parsley confirmed the album release in 2011 by saying "Finishing up in January. Hoping for a spring release" and also confirmed another track from the album titled "Weeping Cherry".
