Notes / Reviews
The album begins with a street scene: Two men are yelling at Ani at a subway entrance. "Hey cutie! Listen mamacita, let's go! Psst. Come here baby! Heeyyy, Mami!" The street scene gives way to music, the surging rhythm of "Vamos Nenas" ("Let's go girls"). "Hellfire", ghostly and ethereal, is the angry tale of a boy who fears his pastor and is told by God to flee the church. "Sea Captain's Daughter" is a one woman mutiny that swells into a dense and gratifying wall of sound. The driving, African-influenced guitar of "Rezando Por Amor" is a prayer for true love to last. The closing track, "Todo Por Ti" (written 1939), will have you happily dancing the Tango, though it remains one of the saddest stories ever told.

Cordero

From Time Out New York:

Lost in the City/Cordero Perdido en la Ciudad is Cordero's first release; a bilingual album of both happy and forlorn songs. Fronted by Ani Cordero, Cordero plays Latin influenced indie rock. Latin rhythms, horns, piano, percussion, guitar, with tinges of Southern gothic, compliment Ani's velvet vocals and imaginative lyrics combining to define Cordero's incomparable sound. Though they may defy categorization, one of the band's "most appealing traits is its ability to integrate a variety of influences" ).
