Capturing the final collaboration between Gertrude Stein (text) and Virgil Thomson (music), which Gertrude didn't live to hear, this very unique 2-CD set presents this work performed by the Santa Fe Opera. Focusing on Susan B. Anthony, the pioneer 19th century women's rights activist, it's a superb mix of incredible word-play about politics, women and men, and voting rights, set to Thompson's 'musical memory book" of gospel hymns, marches, ballads, waltzes, intoned sermons and tunes derived from rural America. Originally released on LP in 1977, the original 4-track master tapes were meticulously remixed and cleaned up.
