Notes / Reviews

Maria has a long recording history, dating back into the 60's when she performed with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, with then-husband Geoff Muldaur. Her 1973 self-titled debut platinum solo album contained her big hits Midnight At the Oasis and Don't You Feel My Leg -- hopefully this rings a bell with some of our readers. This 2001 release (her 25th recording!!) was inspired by classic blues artists of the '20s and '30s, several of them women such as Memphis Minnie and Bessie Smith. Fabulous guest collaborators here, including Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Nelson, Taj Mahal, John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful). 'Far from being either a tribute album or a pale imitation of great country-blues stylists, Richland Woman Blues is a robust, sweaty and sometimes salacious celebration of life lived hard, and expressed in the most invigorating and elemental musical forms. We may never hear music like this played again with such authority, wit and energy.' (Greg Quill, Toronto Star)
