Follow the career of Dr. Eleanor Bramwell, an English physician at the turn of the century. Though encouraged by her physician-father, she must work independently of the Harley Street establishment who are wary of a woman doctor. She begins her own clinic in London, treating the indigent. Though her own family is well-off, she must raise funds to carry on her charity work. She must also constantly defend her mission to both hostile and well-meaning critics, and sometimes, even to herself.
You'll learn not only about Bramwell's life, comfortably and romantically Victorian, but also about her associates: her nurse; her medical partner, a Scotsman (who suffers discrimination for his origin!); her patients; and acquaintances of all backgrounds. There is also plenty of debate on the medical practices and breakthroughs of the day.
