Notes / Reviews
|
On this very unique album of instrumental music, Cherokee composer/ keyboardist Lisa LaRue honors various Native women with 12 songs for synthesizer and piano with percussion accompaniment. Corresponding to each piece, the booklet contains a narrative of an important woman in Native herstory, plus a beautiful painting by Creek artist Joan Hill. Lisa says, 'I have selected Indian women who achieved greatness or faced challenges, but are little known to some Indians, and especially non-Indian Americans... The Cherokees were a matrilinear society... I think it is important for today's people to see that this is not such a new idea.' This 1994 album is issued by a Native American record company. Very beautiful, and very recommended for libraries and schools as well as individuals!
